Messerschmitt of JG53 with a Spitfire in pursuit |

Also known as the 'Emil', this BF109E-3, bearing the pik-as (Ace of Spades) of Jagdgeschwader 53, takes drastic evasive action against a pursuing Spitfire, sweeping so low over the stubble of a harvested field that its propeller wash throwsup a cloud of dust and chaff. Travelling at 290 mph,. the plane is over the trees and across the field before the surprised onlookers have time to even think of taking cover. A steadying hand quietens the horses and the harvesters can only watch in amazement as the high speed chase takes place before them. Since painting this picture, I have spoken to so many people who vividly remember seeing just such a scene - some even having watched it from a similar hay wagon, that I am convinced it was a more common occurrence than we might now believe. Whether the Messerschmitt makes his escape or crashes moments later is left entirely to your imagination.
