Veterans of two major battles meet on a lonely hillside |

The Spring of 1941, and veterans of two different battles in two very different wars, meet for a brief moment on a lonely hillside. The Spitfire and its pilot came through the Battle of Britain virtually unscathed, a rare achievement during a time when life expectancy was measured in mere weeks. Now, with the home skies free of enemy aircraft, there is time to reflect on the friends who were less fortunate. Watching the passing aeroplane, the ploughman also thinks of absent friends: the men and boys of the village and surrounding farms who went with him in 1915 — only to be left behind in Verdun, Paschendaele, and Ypres, their lives sacrificed to what they’d hoped was the war to end all wars.
